Hyderabad,
the 400-year-old Pearl of the Deccan and the second
Silicon Valley of India, is a blend of diverse cultures
conjuring up images of pearls and princes, minarets
and modern high-rise buildings, delectable cuisines
and an old world charm that still emanates from this
modern metropolis.
Timeline
is an attempt to trace the footsteps of this great
city. In the process, we discover this astonishing
facts and dates including how the city got its name,
the birth of its first newspaper and the oldest municipality
in the country.
1562
- Hussain Sagar was constructed.
1589 - Bhagyanagar or Hyderabad as it is called now,
was founded by Mohammed Quli Qutub
Shah as an extension of Golconda.
1591 - Charminar was built as the center of the new
city on the banks of the river Musi.
1687 - Golconda captured by Aurangazeb, ends Qutub
Shahi rule in the Deccan. The same year,
Mecca Masjid was built.
1804 - Mir-Alam Tank construction begins. Completed
in 1806.
1879 - Horse racing starts at Malakpet.
1884 - Foundation of the Falaknuma Palace is laid.
In the same year the official language
of the state was changed from Persian to Urdu.
1897 - Sir Ronald Ross discovered the parasite of
malaria in a dissected Anopheles Mosquito
at Begumpet.
1911 - Mir Osman Ali Khan proclaimed Nizam VII.
1913 - Agricultural Department (Ziraat) established.
1914 - Archeological Department is established.
1915 - Construction of the high court begins and is
completed in 1919.
1917 - Osmania University is established and the first
matriculation exam held. In the same
year, Bureau of Translation and Compilation is established.
1919 - New Constitution of the government is introduced
with an executive council.
1923 - 200th anniversary of the Asaf Jahi dynasty.
In the same year, Jagirdars College was
established (Later Hyderabad Public School).
1926 - Osmania Medical College opened. In the same
year, the first B.A. examination of
Osmania University was held.
1928 - Water Works Department is established.
1931 - Osmania University Building project started.
1934 - British restore to the Nizam, the part of Hyderabad
known as Residency Bazaar (Sultan
Bazaar).
1935 - Construction of Moazzam Jahi market is completed.
In the same year, the
broadcasting
department was established.
1950 - Mir Osman Ali Khan made Rajpramukh of Hyderabad
and remained so in 1956.
1976 - Birla Mandir is constructed by the Birla Trust
adjacent to Naubat pahad.
1988 - First Five Star deluxe Hotel Krishna Oberoi
in opened in Hyderabad.
1998 - Hi-Tech City inaugurated.

1713
- Nizam-ul-Mulk appointed Subedar of six
Subas (provinces) of the Deccan and the
Faujdar of Karnataka.
1725 - Emperor Muhammad Shah confers the
title of Asaf Jah on Nizam-ul-Mulk. |
1756
- The French are driven out of the northern
Circars by the British force, after the
outbreak of war between England and France.
1759 - Salabat Jung concludes a treaty with
the British for the grant of Masulipatnam
and other districts. French influence comes
to an end. |
1779
- The first representative of the British,
John Holland is sent to Hyderabad to act
as an envoy and later as president.
1798 - The Nizam was compelled by the treaty
of 1798 to join the British against Tipu
Sultan during the fourth Mysore War. The
treaty establishes British influence in
Hyderabad. |
1808
- Construction of the British Residency
completed.
1829 - Naseer-Ud-Daula succeeds as Subedar
of the Deccan.
1846 - Hyderabad Medical School established
with dr. William MacLean as its first Principal. |

- Chowmallah Palace is built by Salabat
Jung.
1751 - Salabat Jung is installed as the
Subedar of Deccan.
1753 - The French are assigned the four
districts of Mustafanagar, Rajamundry, Elur
and Chicacole (Srikakulam). |
1762
- Nizam Ali Khan assumes the Subedari of
Deccan.
1763 - The capital of the Deccan is shifted
from Aurangabad to Hyderabad during the
reign of Nizam Ali Khan, Asaf Jah II. |
1803
- Sikandar Jah Asaf III succeeds as the
Subedar of the Deccan.
1806 - Secunderabad founded and named after
Sikandar Jah Asaf III. It was one of the
largest British cantonments in India. |
1854
- Dar-Ul-Uloom founded by Salar Jung I with
facilities for teaching in Arabic, Urdu,
Persian, Telugu, Marathi and English.
1856 - Department of mint and stamps established
with Major Henry Rocks as Mint Master. |

1857
- Afzal-ud-Daula succeeds his father as
Subedar of Deccan.
1858 - A new coin called 'Hali Sicca' is
introduced. In the same year, the Army Department
is established with Henry Rocks as the First
Commander-in-chief of the Nizam's army. |
1868
- Basheer Bagh Palace is constructed by
Sir Asman Jah.
1869 - The first adhesive postage stamp
was issued.
1872 - Cannon Fire at 4:30 AM, 12 noon and
8 PM to inform the Public about time. |
1889
- Clocks are fixed on four sides of the
Charminar.
1890 - Palmoor is named after Mir Mahboob
Ali Khan Nizam VI, as Mahboobnagar. |
1936
- The state aero club is established.
1937 - Nizam VII celebrates the silver jubilee
of his reign.
1947 - The last British Resident Charles
Gordon Herbert leaves Hyderabad. |

- The 'Order of Star of India' is conferred

1867 - Government central printing press
is established. In the same year the Forest
Department is established with Byramji Manoji

- Nizam's State Railway is completed and
open to traffic.
1880 - postal Department is established
with Shah Sawar Jung as its Chief. |
1905
- Foundation of Town Hall (now the Legislative
Assembly) laid in Public Gardens by Nizam
Mir Mahboob Ali Khan on his 40th Birthday.
1908 - The Nizamia Observatory is established.
1910 - Hyderabad Electricity Department
is established with R.L.Gamlen as chief. |
1948
- End of Asaf Jahi era followed by merger
of Hyderabad into the Indian Union.
1967 - Mir Osman Ali Khan, the last Nizam
dies.
1982 - N T Rama Rao's Telugu Desam Party
