Dr. Pokharel obtained his doctoral degree from the University of Wyoming, where his research focused on glaciogenic cloud seeding. He has been actively engaged in cloud seeding research for over a decade. His areas of expertise encompass mountain meteorology, winter orographic cloud seeding, extreme weather events, climate variability, and climate change. Dr. Pokharel has an extensive publication record, having authored more than fifteen peer-reviewed research articles on cloud seeding in high-impact journals. He was the inaugural recipient of the North American Weather Modification Council Scholarship in 2012, recognizing his significant contributions to the field.
In addition to his work in the United States, Dr. Pokharel is involved in international research collaborations in Nepal and Thailand, concentrating on air pollution and forest fire research. Notably, his previous work included a research-to-operations project that developed a cloud-seeding weather forecasting model and tools tailored for the Utah region.
